Disclaimer: This is an 18+ post.

Everyone's always talking about Vaginal Health (this is great btw!) But why don't we shed more light on Penile Health? Incase you're wondering what that is, it refers to the health of the Penis. Penile Health Matters ladies and gentlemen. We should talk about these things more. So let's gets started. The penis is the external male sex organ through which urine passes to the outside and through which males have sexual intercourse. It reaches its full length at puberty.

To keep your penis healthy, the following are actually non negotiable: 1. Good hygiene.

Wash your penis and groin area regularly. Regular showers would generally take care of this. Regularly washing this area keeps sweat, dead skin cells, bacteria, hence offensive odours at bay. While this is important for all males, keeping the penis and groin clean is quite important in uncircumcised males, as it avoids the build up of a substance called smegma. Smegma is a sticky, oily substance that is produced beneath the foreskin. It is normal for smegma to be produced, but it must be cleaned out regularly, or buildup could cause inflammation of the surrounding skin. In severe cases, balanitis could occur, a conditioned where the head of the penis becomes swollen and reddened. 2. Practice Safe Sex! Maintain sexual health by using a condom, or maintain a monogamous relationship with a partner who is free of sexually transmitted infections, or have your sexual partner(s) tested for STIs. The reason you must practice safe sex is you want to avoid these STIs. Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, Syphylis, Human Papilloma Virus (which is notorious for causing genital warts) all have their consequences on sexual and systemic health. Lack of treatment of these STIs could lead to ED, amongst other systemic complications. This is besides the risk of contracting HIV, which has no cure. HPV also has no known cure. 4. Stay hydrated Dehydration has been linked to temporary Erectile Dysfunction. In dehydration, fluid levels are low. Thus there is a lower volume of blood in circulation, and thus it (blood) cannot be pumped sufficiently to the penis to produce and maintain an erection. This would be a good time to grab that bottle of water. 😉

5. Avoid overly rough sex.

By all means, be adventurous, have fun and allow yourself get freaky in the bedroom. You might want to take care with overly rough sex though. The penis can get 'fractured' if mal-handled in the bedroom. Penile Fracture does not refer to the breaking of a bone (the penis contains no bones), but to a tear or rupture in the elastic sheath of tissue below the skin of the penis. This tissue allows the penis to increase in width and length to produce a firm erection.

Fracturing the penis (a rare occurrence) is a medical emergency and requires a quick visit to the emergency room.

You'd realise now, that taking care of the penis is actually quite easy. It would be great to note at this point that you should not hide any penile issue that you might have. It's an amazing part of your body and there should be no shame in discussing it with a healthcare professional should you need to.
